Heritage Day in the Medway Towns 2

Hi folks,

After the pumping station we then had lunch and went to Gillingham.

Down Pier Road to have a look in the workshops of the Medway Queen.

First we went into the display area to read about its' varied life at sea and its' part in the Dunkirk evacuation.

Outside the paddle wheel covers were being prepared for the return of the ship from Bristol in December this year.  It will be towed back to Gillingham, its journey taking about four days.

Although the ship is still in Bristol being prepared for the return other parts of the vessel are being prepared and made ready for fitting.  They are employing a number of apprentices as well as skilled people who will continue to work on the vessel when it is moored along side.

Windows and other artifacts being sprayed in the paint shop, being a weekend there were only staff manning the tour.

The ships original wheel being refurbished for her return.

After our visit we went for a walk along the pier to view the passing craft and catch a glimpse of the power station.

Opposite the Medway Queen workshop was Light Vessel 21 which is becoming an exhibition centre.

As you can see the tide was out but the water does come right up and that chap will be under water.

Well we ran out of time after this one so back home we went.

Thanks for looking.

nite nite, luv Mike
