well still in Maidstone we decided to have a close look in the Museum, a very modern building butted to both sides of the Original Tudor Manor House.
A rather swish entrance greeted us with this grand stained glass window of the Maidstone Crest.
and a stunning Marble Statue of Lady Godiva 1861.
Not sure if this is her or not but in the Courtyard.
The Queen's Own Royal Wesr Kent Regiment Museum which houses the Sutlej Gun which was captured in the Sikh Wars of 1845-6 by the army of Sutlej.
There are only six of these guns known to be in existence and the East India Company presented two guns to Queen Victoria.
It was wonderful with lots of carving on the barrel.
Detail of the front of the cannon.
Original Valiant Fire steam operated pump.
Scene in Great Hall
Well worth a visit when in the area.
Thanks for looking.
nite nite, Luv Mike XX
I've been here a few times Mike ... a fascinating museum .. not to keen on the design of the new building. The front of it looks to me like the Padded Headboard of a bed! lol
ReplyDeleteSuperb shots of that cannon!
Hi Eileen, yes I agree, the old and the 60's new just don't go together.
DeleteFabulous stuff Mike ! The sun is shining here today,
ReplyDeleteSo maybe a better day for all.......Have a great week end !!

Hi Michael.
ReplyDeleteOdd question - could I use one of your photos? Rockwatch, the society for children who love Earth Science, are looking for pictures of fossils in heraldry for an article I wrote. Your photo of the Maidstone crest would be perfect and you'd have full copyright accreditation.
All the best
